PUPIL LEADERSHIP

ASPIRE - LEARN - FLOURISH

The Aspire Learning Federation is made up of two schools - Elm Park Primary School and R J Mitchell Primary School in the London Borough of Havering.

Pupil Leadership

At Elm Park Primary, the emphasis on pupil leadership is a cornerstone of the school's culture. Recognising the value of pupil-led initiatives, the school encourages students to take on leadership roles, contributing their voices and ideas to the educational process. This approach is integral to shaping the teaching and learning at Elm Park Primary, with a vision of growing good people who are ready to inspire others, to make difference in theirs and others lives.

The Class Learning Forum consists of two pupils from each class from Year 1 to Year 6.  These are democratically elected by their classmates.  Our older pupils take on additional responsibilities of chair and secretary.  They meet each half term following an agenda and deciding the agenda for the following meeting empowering students with leadership opportunities, ensuring their perspectives and ideas are heard and valued. The process incorporates student feedback to enhance learning experiences and overall school life.

Within class, through our PSHE curriculum, pupils are encouraged to engage in challenging discussions, debate global and school-related issues, and openly share their feelings and opinions. This is facilitated through ‘Votes 4 Schools’, pupil voice surveys and learning walks.

Additional leadership includes a range of roles designated to Year 6 pupils such as prefect, recycling monitor, EYFS monitor and reading buddy to younger pupils.  Some are selected to be part of the Sports Crew and support in PE lessons and on Sports Day.

Digital Leaders attend an extra curricular club weekly, often trialing new initiatives to take back to class.  These pupils then help in computing lessons.  We have visitors from across the globe interested in how we teach through technology.  Digital Leaders present our provision, particularly during BETT week.

Peer Mentors are a significant element of pupil leadership.  Pupils apply for a position, attend annual training sessions then support their peers with minor disputes following the school’s restorative approach during break and lunch time.

Within class, pupils can be selected to be Learning Experts to support peers in lessons and activities where they have a strength.  Learning Ambassadors are the meet and greet contingency for any external visitors to their class.

Each role plays a pivotal role in fostering a collaborative and inclusive school environment, where student input is encouraged and instrumental in guiding school policies and practices.

Through a range of pupil leadership roles, Elm Park Primary is committed to producing confident, articulate leaders capable of applying their skills in real-life contexts, thus preparing them for future challenges and opportunities.
